Antique Insects & Bugs Jewellery

During what is referred to as the ‘Romantic’ period, there was a rise in popularity of jewellery based on animals, and in particular insects and bugs.

Brooches pendants and rings were among the most common pieces produced during this period and were all extremely intricately decorated by very highly skilled craftsmen.

They were often encrusted with a variety of brightly coloured gems which were used to create the creature’s eyes and body to create a kaleidoscope of colours.

While you would think that insects and bugs are hardly the kind of creatures to be celebrated and worn as high-fashion, especially in the Victorian period, they were!

In fact, the trend spread further than just jewellery, and insects could be found on clothing, veils and parasols!

Bees, in particular, were popular as they were the emblem of the House of Bonaparte in France.
