An Extremely Rare and Gorgeous Georgian ‘Firmament’ Ring set with seven (Lucky) large Rose-cut Diamonds.
These sparkling Georgian Diamonds have been hand-cut by a skilled craftsman at the end of the 18^th century, just after the French Revolution and some years before the seismic changes of the Napoleonic Wars.
This is a ‘bague de Firmament’ or Firmament Ring and was made in France during this difficult period of their history.
It may have belonged to a member of the aristocracy of the time who lost their life under the guillotine.
It may have been smuggled out of France by an émigré into England at that time.
The Firmament is the Sky or Heaven. The deep Royal Blue Enamel of the ring represents the sky at night, and the scintillating Diamonds represent the twinkling stars. It is associated with magical powers, and reminds the wearer of the human link to Nature and/or God.
Firmament Rings were started about 1775 by an English enameller who perfected the smooth enamel technique.
The eldest daughter of King George III was gifted with one in 1788 by her brother & that set off the fad... They were called "rings of the sky" for stars in the night sky.
They were later copied by the French, and produced for the wealthiest gentry of fashionable Paris, up to around 1820.
This one dates c. 1798. (210-220 years old).
This is the first that we have come across in over 40 years of trading. So it is extremely Rare.
The Quality is Superb. The Diamonds have been expertly hand-cut (rose shape) and have great presence and sparkle.
The center Diamond is oval in shape and measures approx. One Carat. The Six Diamonds that surround it are graduated, each one ¼ carat or more. 
That makes over 2 ¼ Carats of Rare Georgian Diamonds.
They are firmly claw-set in Silver, with a background of deep translucent and radiant Royal Blue Enamel. There is a line of white enamel around the edge, as a frame. (possibly representing the sky during the day?).
The mount is in  substantial 18 carat Gold and is smoothly concave at the back to fit comfortably and intelligently onto the finger.
The shank is a double band of 18 carat yellow Gold.
