These are Superb Quality Hand-Carved Whitby Jet Earrings c. 1880.
They are made in several sections so that they dangle alluringly with head movement.
The main section is a beautifully carved Acanthus leaf. This has been carved with great style and craftsmanship.
The Acanthus leaf design was very popular in Victorian (and ancient) times; it represented Quality, Longevity and Creativity- an artistic symbol.
There is a perfectly spherical pendant ball beneath this section.
Above, there are the fixtures and the long Gold Ear wires, for extra security.
The Earrings hang 2 ½ inches from the top of the Earwire.
