SILVER BROOCHES - 1

Marcasites are known as "Black Diamonds"; they are formed from Hematite – an iridescent black-grey stone found in the mountains of the English Lake District. Large crystals have so much lustre that they used to be used as mirrors!

Scottish Pebble Jewelry
It was Queen Victoria and her love of all things Scottish who instigated the fashion for this type of jewellery. When she purchased Balmoral in 1848, the Queen's children wore tartans and her guests at a Ball to mark the opening of the 1851 Exhibition were all required to dress in Scottish outfits.
The heart of English society was entirely captivated by the subtle colours of moss and heather, the mysteries of high grey castle walls and the strict heraldry which still ruled the clans.
All types of Scottish Pebble jewellery are now becoming scarce and highly sought after, with prices for even later and modest pieces going sky-high.
The superb craftsmanship and work that went into making these pieces is now being recognised worldwide.
